  4. Their courtroom showdown with Establishment became etched in
  5. American history, and when it was over, it had made
  6. counterculture celebrities of the Chicago Seven, a.k.a. Rennie
  7. Davis, David Dellinger, John Froines, Tom Hayden, Abbie Hoffman,
  8. Jerry Rubin and Lee Weiner (Bobby Seale, originally the eighth
  9. defendant, was tried separately). Now, exactly 17 years after
  10. the acquittal on charges stemming from the 1968 Democratic
  11. Convention protests, the recalcitrant nonconspirators reunited
  12. for the Chicago Conspiracy Trial, an HBO drama that uses actors
  13. as well on-camera comments by the real-life participants. "We
  14. haven't had this many together since 1973," jokes Hoffman. "It
  15. takes the curt system or Hollywood to get us together."  Still,
  16. reassembling the old gang in California was no easy task.
  17. Hayden, a state assemblyman and husband of Jane Fonda, and
  18. Froines, an associate professor at UCLA's School of Public
  19. Health, live in the Golden State. But Seale came from
  20. Philadelphia, where he is studying for a double master's in
  21. political science and African-American studies at Temple. Davis
  22. runs a high-tech financing firm in Colorado; Weiner is a fund
  23. raiser for progressive causes in Washington; Rubin is getting
  24. ready to open a restaurant in New York City; Hoffman has been
  25. lecturing and writing (Steal This Urine Test is due in
  26. September). Dellinger was the only one who could not make the
  27. reunion photo session. His reasons, though, were pure. He was
  28. on trial for unlawful entry in the Capitol Rotunda last August
  29. while protesting aid to the Nicaraguan contras.
